Sarah: Earning Your Unified Theater T-Shirt Every Day
Sara--a student at Sedgwick Middle School in West Hartford, Connecticut--was so excited to take on a leadersip role in her second year of Unified Theater in the Fall of 2015. Together with her fellow student leaders, Sara led a group of over 100 students to have an amazingly fun time in their show, "Hollywood: Everyone's a Star." Though only in her second year of Unified Theater, it's clear Sara embodies what Unified Theater is all about. At the final curtain call, Sara gave a short speech & challenged us all to think about how we earn our Unified Theater t-shirt every day through our actions & words:
"I'll try not to talk too long. They say it's best to leave your audience before your audience leaves you. Hello, my name is Sara. I'm one of the producers along with Samantha and Ruby. I've been involved with Unified Theater for two years, and I can honestly say it's one of the best decisions I've ever made. I'm so fortunate to come to a place after school where I can just be myself... The other day I was thinking, "What makes someone able to wear a Unified Theater shirt?" Obviously they have a body, but what has to fill those bodies?
I belive it's good character and integrity, and that's what Unified Theater teaches us. Along with working close together and embracing all our individuality, we learn how to be inclusive and good citizens, which makes us pull off these shirts so well.
So my advice to all of you is before everything you do in your life, whether it be an action, a thought, or an idea, to think of your Unified Theater shirt. Would you be able to fully pull it off? Would it be wearable? Thank you, and hope to see you all on the red carpet!"
